- "Energy" is a hugely significant issue for all of us these days. We've all heard the discussions about Climate Change , about Peak Oil and about Sustainable Development. We know that we only have a finite amount of fossil fuels left, that we need to get more efficient at generating and managing energy, and we need to be able to switch our technologies away from being carbon emitting, to being carbon neutral. We've set up our Community Energy Company to help to address these issues in Wigan, and to help the third sector get better energy performance. We want to also provide a link into new, greener businesses for local young people. We've set up some new services which we think can really help local organisations - and we intend to widen our scope to include whole communities across the borough.
-
Encouraging collective purchasing of energy for communities and community organisations
-
Conducting Energy Assessments for community buildings
-
Surveying and assessing buildings for renewable energy
-
Installing small scale renewable energy systems
-
Providing support to finance renewable energies, through, grants, loans and ongoing revenue returns
These services can reduce energy bills, improve our carbon emissions, help us to generate more of our own energy, and help to prepare our young people for growing numbers of employment opprtunities in the new green technologies.
They call it the “decentralisation of energy”. What that means is that there are lots of opportunities for us to create our own energy in communities, or to buy it collectively from sources that are more sustainable.
Our new energy company is a Community Interest Company, limited by shares. We chose this company structure so that we can include customers, staff and partners as shareholders in our organisation, allow them to have genuine influence on what we do and encourage us to be properly accountable. Our shareholding policy is available on request, just drop us an email at
