Welcome to the WiganRecycles website!
WiganRecycles is a social enterprise operating in the Wigan borough. We were set up three years ago with a view to helping to improve the environmental performance of the borough. Since then we've worked on a wide range of projects.
Even though we are deep in an economic downturn at the moment, WiganRecycles sees this as a period of great opportunity – particularly for environmental businesses. No matter which way the new government jumps, no matter what their take on Climate Change - there can be no doubt that our current patterns of energy use aren't sustainable - and where we get our energy from, and what we do with our waste is going to have to change.
We think that as these green economy opportunities come to market there will be increasing demand for people with the relevant skills and experience. We in Wigan will either have to buy those skills in from elsewhere, or develop them ourselves – and we want to make sure that local people in some of our more challenging areas are not excluded from these possibilities. That's why we want to develop our services so that not only can we deliver some of the environmental improvements that Wigan needs, but we can use that to train local people so that they can enjoy the benefits of the new green economy.
At Wigan Recycles we have two main aims -
To create employment and training opportunities related to environmental improvements, waste management and energy generation in the Wigan borough, and;
To promote the social enterprise business model.
